Nottingham Forest players were involved as the Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was abandoned at half-time on Monday night after two people were shot dead in Brussels.
The victims were both Swedish and the incident is being treated as terrorism. The shooting took place around 45 minutes before kick-off and around three miles from the stadium.
Forest's Orel Mangala played the first 45 minutes of the game after being named in Belgium's starting line-up, while Reds winger Anthony Elanga was named on the bench for Sweden. With the score at 1-1 at half-time, it is reported that both sets of players decided not to return for the second half of the match after hearing about the shooting.
The Belgian national team's Twitter account wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Due to the incidents in Brussels earlier tonight, play is suspended. Our thoughts are with all those affected."
Speaking after the game, Sweden manager Janne Andersson confirmed that the players decided not to go out for the second half of the game. "I felt it was completely unreal," he told a press conference.
"What kind of world do we live in today? I was supposed to have a good chat with the players but I heard it and almost started crying. When the team started talking, we agreed 100 percent that we didn't want to play on out of respect for the victims and their families."
After the abandonment was confirmed, fans were kept inside the stadium for their own safety. The 35,000 crowd was safely evacuated just after 11pm UK time.
