'Perfect' Brian Clough and Jimmy Sirrel mural unveiled outside of Nottingham pub

A "perfect" mural honouring two of Nottingham's footballing greats has been revealed in the city. An impressive piece of street art across from the Trent Navigation pub on Meadows Lane in Nottingham has further immortalised Nottingham Forest and Notts County's greatest ever managers.

The mural of Brian Clough and Jimmy Sirrel, who were close friends despite the local rivalry, is based on a photograph taken in 1985 of the footballing icons on Trent Bridge - half way between Meadow Lane and the City Ground. Forza Garibaldi, a Nottingham Forest fan group which has been behind some of the City Ground's displays, started planning the mural after noticing other cities' wall art.

Although the fan group had searched for a long time to find a suitable location for the mural, the art itself was completed incredibly quickly - with workers at the pub turning up on Tuesday morning (October 17) amazed by the overnight transformation of the wall.

The Trent Navigation pub owns the London House building on which the image is painted, which it uses mostly for storage. Bosses at the venue, which is well liked by football fans in the city with its Big Shed outdoor fanzone, said it was an easy decision to host the art.

The people behind the project were looking for a long time for a good site and we were really quick to say yes when they asked if they could use our wall.

"It has been in the works for a long time but it all pulled together in the last seven days as we had been waiting for specialist windows that could be painted over. It got painted white before and then the mural started at 6.30pm last night and was finished by 11.15am this morning - it is really impressive.

"We are always really busy when both clubs are playing at home and both sets of fans think of it as theirs. I think it shows the respect and friendship between the two great figures and clubs really well."

Pub staff expressed excitement that the mural had been finished ahead of hosting Nottingham Forest podcast Garibaldi Red's live show on Wednesday, October 18. Mr Holodynsky added: "I think it will be the first of many now in the city."

The mural was created by MurWalls, whose artists have created many artworks of footballing heroes across the UK, such as Sergio Aguero and Pep Guardiola in Manchester and a number of Liverpool legends including Jurgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard near Anfield. It has already proved popular with fans of Notts County and Nottingham Forest fans passing by, who stopped to have a better look and take photos after spotting the painting on Tuesday afternoon.
