Richards Keys delivers verdict on incident involving Ryan Yates and James Maddison

Nottingham Forest played Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday and there was a huge flash point involving James Maddison and Ryan Yates.

The Reds huffed and puffed in the capital but were beaten by two pieces of brilliance from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro, with Tottenham winning 3-1.

In the first half, Forest settled the better of the two teams. Chris Wood cancelled out a Murillo own goal and the New Zealand striker should have put the Reds ahead.

Gary Lineker critiqued Wood for his miss - and he will know in his heart that his erratic moment likely proved extremely costly from a Forest perspective.

It was the incident involving Maddison and Forest midfielder Yates that caught the eye in the first half. The Tottenham player was being marked by Yates and appeared to be punched in the stomach by the playmaker.

Staying true to form for Forest this season, the VAR chose not to recommend a review to referee Simon Hooper who allowed play to continue with a ticking off for both.

Following the game - and that particular incident - another pundit has now weighed into the debate and delivered a rather interesting verdict.

Richard Keys delivers verdict on Forest star Ryan Yates incident with James Maddison For Keys, he's never backwards in coming forwards - especially when it comes to match officials and VAR. Now, he's weighed into this debate that has divided opinion since it took place at the weekend.

Keys is absolutely incensed by what he saw at the weekend. He's taken aim at Michael Salisbury in the VAR bunker and Jamie Redknapp who was covering the game for Sky Sports.

Keys, now an anchor for BeIN Sports, said on his latest blog: "And was everybody in the bunker asleep when Maddison punched Ryan Yates off the ball at Spurs?

"It's not so bad that Simon Hooper missed it - but it was as clear as day for VAR. Maddison should've been sent off.

"I'm told Jamie Redknapp didn't want to make much of the incident on Sky. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Maddison models for Redknapp's clothing company. If that's not a conflict of interest I don't know what is."

Forest experiment simply isn't working Nothing but respect for Mark Clattenburg but Forest appointing him feels like a bit of a disaster. It's not improved any of the decisions that the Reds have got in their favour - and it's as though the officials give Forest even less now.

It's not hard to understand the concept of why Clattenburg came in. Appointing referee analysts is popular on the continent, although it's a pretty unheard-of concept in the Premier League.

Given this incident on Forest midfielder Yates wasn't given, it's a mystery what the purpose of VAR as a system is. The referee clearly missed it and yet it still wasn't reviewed.

Clattenburg will be collecting a wage from Forest and it just feels pretty pointless. The officials seem scared to death when it comes to making decisions involving Forest and perhaps the club will have to move on from the analyst in the summer.
