Steve Cooper plans to 'check' on Nottingham Forest duo after international game abandoned

Head coach Steve Cooper will double-check on the welfare of Nottingham Forest duo Orel Mangala and Anthony Elanga ahead of Saturday's clash with Luton Town.

Belgium international Mangala and Sweden's Elanga were involved in the Euro 2024 qualifier between the two countries which was abandoned on Monday night after two people were shot dead in Brussels. The killings happened before kick-off, with the game abandoned at about 9.30pm BST.

The gunman was still at large at the time, leading to fans and players being ordered to stay in the King Baudouin Stadium for their safety. The ground was then evacuated at about 10.45pm.

Cooper was quick to get in touch with his players on the night. And although he anticipates both being available to face the Hatters, he will check on their mentality before the game.

"I was actually watching the game on television, live," he said. "I saw it all unfold. First and foremost, football aside, it was obviously a tragic event. When you have players - people - involved in something like that, you worry a little bit more.

"I did text both the boys after the game was abandoned and they both replied fairly quickly. They both told me they were in the dressing rooms and safe, even if they were a little bit worried about their families, who were in the crowd.

"It was an unfortunate event but, fortunately for them, they and their families are all safe and well. They both trained yesterday; they were back in the country and around the place yesterday afternoon.

"They both seemed fine. I will check up on them again, because when you reflect on things like this, it can sometimes take a few days to sink in. Hopefully their mindset will be okay."
