What Michail Antonio said about Forest hiring Clattenburg is now interesting after he's linked with return

Nottingham Forest have been linked with the re-signing of West Ham United striker Michail Antonio this summer.

The Reds are going to chase a number of players during the window, with quality over quantity likely to be prioritised.

Antonio is one name who was linked with Forest earlier this week, with Julen Lopetegui deeming him surplus at the London Stadium.

The 34-year-old spent just over a season at Forest back during the 2014/15 campaign and he lit up the City Ground.

He scored 14 goals and claimed 15 assists during that campaign and earned himself a PS7.5 million move to West Ham.

There, he's become their all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League era - and he also has a podcast with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

They discuss the game's hot topics and last season some claims were made from Antonio about Forest appointing Mark Clattenburg and they now look rather interesting.

What Michail Antonio said about Forest hiring Mark Clattenburg Every Tom, Dick and Harry seemed to have an opinion on Forest and their decision to hire Clattenburg last season.

The Reds appointed the former FIFA referee as an analyst to oversee games and share details about match officials with the club.

However, it was met with some negativity - with Gary Neville particularly critical - and the experiment didn't really work.

After Forest were denied three penalties in a 2-0 defeat at Everton, Antonio shared something he noticed about the decisions the club had been getting.

He told the Footballer's Football Podcast: "The referee should not be on VAR for that game. This is the business end of the season - no one in the bottom three should be refereeing any games with any of those teams.

"They've had bad decisions all season, but I think it's got worse since they employed Mark Clattenburg. I honestly feel like referees don't want to give them decisions because they've done that. All three could easily have been a penalty."

Antonio was right about Forest appointment of Clattenburg If the experienced player re-signs for Forest he might not be able to be quite so forthright about discussing club affairs.

However, we think he made some perfect points when discussing Clattenburg and his appointment at Forest.

Fixture Decision Forest v Newcastle Taiwo Awoniyi not awarded penalty Forest v West Ham Neco Williams not awarded penalty Everton v Forest Giovanni Reyna now awarded penalty Everton v Forest Ashley Young not penalised for handball in the box Everton v Forest Callum Hudson-Odoi not awarded penalty Brighton v Forest Jakub Moder not sent off for foul on Neco Williams Wrong VAR and referee calls since Mark Clattenburg arrived at Forest The Reds were on the wrong end of some horrible decisions by the match officials in the Premier League - with the majority of them coming after Clattenburg had arrived.

Now, the club can move on from that episode with the current Gladiators referee no longer going to be working in tandem with Forest.

Antonio always speaks fondly about the Reds and when discussing this situation regarding the club he hit the nail firmly on the head.
