Newcastle number or captain's jersey: Five potential squad numbers for Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest
Source:Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United - but his squad number hasn't been confirmed just yet.

The midfielder is the club's newest recruit and joins from the Magpies for PS35 million having come through their academy.

Anderson was a player given plenty of game time by Eddie Howe at St James' Park and last season he featured in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old looks like a useful addition and he certainly fits the profile of a player that suggests the recruitment strategy will change at Forest.

With the ink drying on his contract, we've looked at what number Anderson could have printed on his back in the Garibaldi next season.

This is the most likely given that it's the number that he wore at Newcastle - although Forest do currently have a number 32 in Andrew Omobamidele.

Still, he's only been at the club for one season and he might look to take another number for next season.

Anderson clearly likes the number 32 having worn it whenever he's been given a first-team number at Newcastle.

Now, it remains to be seen if he can wrangle in from the clutches of Omobamidele ahead of next season.

8 Previously worn by: Cheikhou Kouyate, Jack Colback, Chris Cohen

Another very viable number could be the number eight shirt and that's also been worn by the likes of Lars Bohinen, Scot Gemmill and Roy Keane.

This Reds shirt would carry extra weight but perhaps Anderson is the sort of player who can carry it off.

As a central midfielder, this would be a more stereotypical number for the new recruit to have and this might be in his sights.

Kouyate didn't play much last season and if Anderson does get the number eight, he will hope to produce more than he did wearing it.

5 Previously worn by: Steve Chettle, Orel Mangala, Wes Morgan

This probably wouldn't be the most obvious choice for Anderson given that he's a midfielder and not a defender.

However, Mangala wore this number last and perhaps Anderson will look to grasp this shirt as well.

The Belgian midfielder has vacated the number five after signing for Lyon with his loan move set to become permanent.

In our view, this shirt is more than likely going to be saved for a defensive recruit given that it looks nailed on that one will come in this summer.

12 Previously worn by: Andrey Santos, Keylor Navas, Brian Laws

It seems apt to put the number 12 in the discussion given that it was this number that Anderson wore on loan with Bristol Rovers.

He spent a short period playing for the current League One outfit and produced the goods for the EFL outfit.

For whatever reason, he was given the number 12 shirt during his time at the Memorial Stadium.

Now, this number might come into the discussion once again when it comes to picking his Forest shirt number.

4 Previously worn by: Joe Worrall, Des Walker, Riccardo Scimeca

Another one that could come into the thinking of Anderson is number four - with captain Joe Worrall set to leave the club.

Anderson can play in a number of different midfield roles and as a result, he might choose to go with the left-field choice of number four.

This one does perhaps feel a little bit unlikely again but you just never know what he might be thinking.

Surely someone will be keen to grasp the number four shirt next season so why not Anderson?

Anderson could prove smart addition for Forest Whatever number the man signed from Newcastle gets, he will be aiming to prove himself to the Forest supporters.

The PS35 million fee being mentioned is a lot but ultimately that's football in its modern state and it shouldn't be used as a stick to beat Anderson with.

Forest have to get things right in the transfer market this summer and it does now look as though they've avoided a points deduction this season.

Anderson at 21 looks like an attractive signing and hopefully, he can star in Nuno Espirito Santo's midfield in the future.
