Morgan Gibbs-White's chances of playing for England have just significantly increased - opinion

Nottingham Forest have 13 players away on international duty for the next fortnight, looking to help their country claim victories in forthcoming games.

Ibrahim Sangare withdrew from the Ivory Coast squad yesterday and he will instead remain at Forest for some treatment.

For the others, however, it's an important time. Playing for your country is the proudest moment a player can get, with domestic action pausing for the time being.

For Morgan Gibbs-White the next few days could be a lifetime in waiting. He could get the nod to feature for England for the first time after his call-up to the senior ranks.

The 24-year-old was unlucky not to be named in the 33-man England squad for Euro 2024 after his six goals and 10 assists during the 2023/24 campaign.

Now, however, he will be keen to make up for lost time and prove to the nation that he belong within the England setup.

Whilst some might have predicted a stint on the bench and not playing much for England, that might not be the case.

MORE FOREST STORIES

It was announced last night that Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins have all withdrawn from the squad for games with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Two of those - Palmer and Foden - typically operate as number 10s, which must surely mean a chance in one of the games for Forest star Gibbs-White.

Gibbs-White must grasp England opportunity Forest fans will be eagerly waiting for the team news for Saturday's game in Dublin - and so too will Gibbs-White.

It would be such a dream opportunity for him to start for England and give it's in the Nations League, it would be a competitive fixture.

Gibbs-White deserves it too. According to The Other 14 on X, Gibbs-White registers an average of three chances per game, with nine to his name for the season so far.

He has some very good company on that list and he sits higher on it than Palmer, Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen and Bukayo Saka who he's in the England squad with.

Gibbs-White has joined up with England with Lee Carsley in interim charge after the deparing of Gareth Southgate after a second successive European Championship final defeat.

Not since 1997 have Forest had a player get on the pitch and don the Three Lions and hopefully that can now end this weekend with Gibbs-White collecting his maiden cap.
