Newcastle United are expected to make a new move to sign Anthony Elanga either in January or next summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that, after a failed deadline-day bid, the Magpies remain determined to land their man and will continue to track him this season.

Sources say any deal to sign Elanga will not depend on the future of Anthony Gordon after Football Insider revealed the club are trying to tie him down to a new deal.

However, they are expected to face competition from multiple clubs across Europe who have taken note of his performances in the last 12 months.

The 22-year-old has impressed at Nottingham Forest under the management of both Steve Cooper and Nuno Espirito Santo, and there is recognition that he may now be ready for a step up.

Newcastle are also aware that Elanga would count as a homegrown player to help with European registration rules as he came through the academy system at Manchester United.

Newcastle United frustrated once again in Anthony Elanga chase It was a frustrating summer transfer window for the Magpies who completed just four incoming transfer deals - two of which were for backup goalkeepers.

Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy were joined by free agent Liam Kelly and 21-year-old William Osula as the club struggled to get business over the line.

The club missed out on long-term transfer target Marc Guehi after extensive negotiations with Crystal Palace, before a late move for Elanga also failed.

Newcastle had also looked to move on Miguel Almiron - something which sources say would have triggered a move for the Forest star earlier in the window.

However, the club were unable to shift the Paraguayan and no deal for Elanga materialised.

However, they remain keen on Elanga and will closely monitor his progress over the coming season with a view to landing a deal further down the line.
