Nottingham Forest playmaker now England's 'obvious option' as 'incredible names' pull out

Morgan Gibbs-White has racked up dozens of appearances for England youth since he was at school, helping win the under-17s World Cup along he way back in 2017.

But the Nottingham Forest playmaker, now aged 24, has had to wait a long time to get his chance to run out at senior level - with his dream finally expected to come true this afternoon (5pm) against Ireland in Dublin in the Nations League.

The absence of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer through injury has seen parts of the national media suggest Gibbs-White is now "the obvious option at number 10" although Jack Grealish is elsewhere tipped to start alongside Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon behind Harry Kane.

Gibbs-White can understand having to be patient when his competition is Bellingham, Foden and Palmer but he is hungry to take any opportunity that comes his way under interim boss Lee Carsley, his old England under-21s manager.

"They're incredible names. I've waited for this chance so long, I just want to take it," he said. "But those are probably three of the best players in the world so to be behind them is a good and a bad thing."

Gibbs-White was a big part of Carsley's junior team that won the European under-21s Championship last year alongside teammates including Palmer and Gordon.

He said: "Winning a World Cup and Euros at youth level, I definitely gained a winning mentality and it's something I'm trying to bring now."

He added: "There are certain elements of what we did last summer (that Carsley) wants the same now. He believes in us and trusts in us. His words were to express yourself."
