Portuguese outlet Record say that Benfica will be triggering the EUR6m release clause in Fernandez's loan agreement. The 21-year-old joined them for the second half of the season after playing for Grenada for the first part and now his time in England looks to be coming to an end.

Since joining Benfica in the winter transfer window, he has made 13 appearances across all competitions. He was an unused substitute in their last three European games and has made just three starts since joining Benfica. Despite playing a bit-part role, he will end his four-year association at Old Trafford this summer.

Fernandez is to depart the Red Devils having never played for them in a competitive English domestic match. He spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Deepdale, playing in 42 games in all competitions with an impressive six assists.

"(Fernandez) is a player who fits into Benfica's offensive process and ideas," Pinto told O Jogo.

"He appears often in the penalty area, crosses well, moves into midfield well and defends well.

"With Carreras, Benfica can make better use of their offensive ideas. He appears in the end zone and finishes. And he also showed that he has aggression."

"The fact that he has a left foot gives the team another strength.

"A full-back has to create spaces, appear in the area, and have creativity. And Carreras has those things. He is a player with quality and hunger for the game. He has already shown that.

"I like him. He needs to play more, but he is very useful, I believe he will seize the opportunity. With playing time he acquires rhythm and confidence. It was like that with Grimaldo. You have to remember that he also had a period of adaptation and that the best time was the last one."
