'Without being too cynical': Sky pundit gives Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday score prediction
Source:Sheffieldwednesday

David Prutton has given his score prediction for Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday in what is a huge Championship showdown this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday head to Sunderland on Saturday, for their final game of the 2023/24 season.

It'll cap a remarkably turbulent season in which the Owls have sacked Xisco Munoz and hired their saviour Danny Rohl, who against the odds has Wednesday on the brink of safety.

As things stand, Sheffield Wednesday sit in 20th place of the Championship table on 50 points.

Plymouth Argyle sit in 21st and on 48 points, playing Hull City on the final day, whilst Birmingham City are in 22nd and on 47 points ahead of their final game vs Norwich City.

The Owls then need just a point to confirm their safety; failing that, they need Birmingham City to not win against Norwich City, with both Wednesday and Birmingham City boasting a -16 goal different right now.

But if Prutton's prediction is anything to go off, the Owls won't need to rely on goal difference or any result other than their own.

David Prutton's prediction for Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday Giving his thoughts and score predictions for Sky Sports ahead of the final day of the season, former Owls midfielder Prutton discussed Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday.

Asked whether Rohl's done a good job at Hillsborough this season, Prutton said:

"It is now, because they're out of the bottom three. He was doing perceived good work but they were still in the bottom three. Now that they're out of the bottom three, without being too cynical, that's when it becomes good work. You can change XYZ in the team, if you get relegated, it's not a job well done, is it?"

He added:

"If he gets them safe, it's a fantastic job."

Prutton predicts a 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday win.

When was the last time Sheffield Wednesday won away at Sunderland In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Sheffield Wednesday lost 3-0 at home, conceding three goals in the opening half hour of the game.

Munoz was in charge for that game though.

Sunderland will be expecting a much different and much improved Sheffield Wednesday side on Saturday, and the Black Cats seem less of a threat than when Wednesday last played them.

They've won just two of their last 14 Championship games now.

But the last time Sheffield Wednesday won away at Sunderland was in 2018; a 2-0 win like Prutton has predicted for this weekend.

It would be a monumental win to cap off what is one of the unlikeliest escapes in football history, and it would surely set Wednesday up for a promising summer and maybe even a promising few years ahead.

Rohl and his players will be fully focussed on finishing the task at hand now, with kick off at 12:30pm on Saturday.
