‘Obviously’: Marco Gabbiadini explains the positives to Sunderland hiring 'hungry' Michael Beale

Marco Gabbiadini has given his thoughts on how Michael Beale's appointment may be a good thing for Sunderland.

It's safe to say Michael Beale's arrival on Wearside hasn't gone down very well, with pundits and fans both sharing their concern.

The 43-year-old was named the new Sunderland head coach on Monday, two weeks after Tony Mowbray was sacked.

His appointment comes months after he was dismissed by Rangers, after a third defeat in seven games in the Scottish Premiership.

Beale has previously been praised for his coaching ability, having spent time under Steven Gerrard at Rangers and Aston Villa, as well as working with Chelsea and Liverpool's academy.

However, he hasn't seemed to replicate that success into management.

It looks like the Black Cats will keep the 'management' side of things to a minimal though, and are hoping to reap the rewards of Beale's knowledge on the training pitch.

Despite the criticism from supporters, former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini has explained the positives in Beale's arrival at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Gabbiadini said: "He was not one of the names heavily mentioned earlier in this piece MORE SUNDERLAND STORIES"He has come into contention maybe because of the difficulties of getting some of the other choices out of their current clubs, which can be an expensive situation.

"I think he brings a certain amount of variety in his background where he has coached, has been in academy situations, been abroad.

"You would not say he is massively experienced, but one of those up and coming and you would think fairly hungry coaches who would need to do a good job in this situation to really help his credentials.

"What do Sunderland fans do now? It has understandably been very difficult to get on board with these appointment, especially listening to Rangers' fans feedback on his eleven-month tenure there.

Michael Beale was a lot more successful at QPR though, with many of their fans very upset when he left the club.

But that arguably reflects more on his personality, which is another angle that the Sunderland faithful aren't too keen on.

Sunderland clearly wanted a head coach though - someone who can continue the brilliant work with these players on the pitch and help develop the younger ones.

He has shown he can certainly do that, but it is everything else that it is a worry.

But we host Coventry City this weekend and we need to get behind him.

Beale needs to get this right though, because he will have supporters on his back very quickly if not.
