Under-21s set for PL2 play-off action
Source:Safc

Sunderland Under-21s are set to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League 2 play-offs.

The round of 16 tie will be played on Monday 6 May at Eppleton Colliery Welfare (2pm).

Wolves finished the Premier League 2 season in 10th spot having won nine, drawn four and lost seven of their 19 league matches.

The Wanderers have recorded two wins in their last six outings, with one of those defeats coming against the young Black Cats at the beginning of April. Sunderland ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Tommy Watson and a late Marshall Burke strike.

Owen Hesketh is Wolves' talisman with six goals in 14 appearances, while attacking midfielder Tawanda Chirewa is another one to watch, having fired five times in eight outings.

James Collins is the hosts' Under-21 Head Coach. The former midfielder started his coaching career with Crewe Alexandre after an eight-year spell playing for the League Two club.

Premier League 2

Tottenham Hotspur finished top of the Premier League 2 table following the conclusion of the regular season, four points ahead of second-place West Ham United.

This is the first campaign of the new PL2 format, where all sides have been condensed into one division, with no promotion or relegation, and the title is decided by play-off matches rather than league position.

How the new play-off format works...

Each club are seeded according to their final position. As Tottenham Hotspur finished top, their reward will be a last-16 tie against the bottom-ranked team still left in the competition - 16th-placed Aston Villa.

Similarly, second-placed West Ham United will take on 15th-placed Blackburn Rovers, and third-placed Fulham will face 14th-placed Nottingham Forest.

The pairings continue in that format throughout with the higher-placed team having home advantage in the one-legged ties.

The last-16 ties will take place between Friday, 3 May, and Monday, 6 May. If a match is tied after 90 minutes, extra-time, and a penalty shootout will follow.
