Swansea City boss Williams says it's 'plausible' star is sold as defender goes under knife

Swansea City head coach Luke Williams says it's "plausible" they could sell centre-back Nathan Wood this summer.

Wood will be heading into the final year of his contract next season and generated a significant amount of interest from Southampton last summer, with Swans' former head coach Russell Martin keen on a reunion with the defender.

Whether the Saints return for Wood again remains to be seen, but Williams concedes he may have to be sold given his contract situation.

"There's an obvious conclusion to be drawn there, that this might be the correct moment [to sell] because it makes sense all round maybe," Williams told the BBC.

"But the situation that presents itself [means] it's plausible that [a transfer] will happen."

Southampton are believed to have made two offers last year worth in the region of PS10million. Swansea's finances have come under scrutiny this week after they filed their latest set of accounts, which recorded nearly PS18million in losses.

Williams said Wood's future would not necessarily be tied to the financial situation of the club.

"All clubs have the possibility to sell a player, let's be honest, every single club bar one per cent, if an entire state is backing them or something like this," he said.

"The players all have a price, that's the truth. But what I would say is that while the numbers are quite shocking at first, that is this industry and we are actually par for the course. It's not like we are a massive outlier and it's breaking news.

"That just shows the commitment of the people that are here now keeping everything. They are keeping it going because they believe we can be successful, and if we are successful everyone is happy."

Meanwhile, Swans defender Harry Darling has undergone surgery on a foot injury.

The centre-back will miss the last game of the season tomorrow against Millwall but Williams says the procedure went well and he is on course for a return to action by the time pre-season comes around again.

"Harry Darling has had an operation on his foot, he has been in some discomfort," said Williams.

"But he has been playing so well and wanted to keep playing, but we got to a stage where it got too much. He had the surgery and the surgeon has confirmed we had made the correct call, and it went well.

"He has been in today and now he can work over the summer to be ready for pre-season. Otherwise the group is looking very good, and the levels have stayed the same, there has been no drop-off."
