Trent Alexander-Arnold has jokingly hit back at James Maddison, after the Tottenham Hotspur man poked fun at him this week.

Maddison posted a snap of he and Alexander-Arnold chatting during England training on Instagram earlier this week. "He's still asking for a replay," captioned the 26-year-old, in reference to Spurs' lucky recent win over Liverpool.

It was all good natured from Maddison, who has since claimed to have an excellent relationship with Trent. But asked what was really going on in the picture by Channel 4 Sport on TikTok, Liverpool's right-back has a different version of events.

"But, I just showed him the video of when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated!" Burn from Trent, who couldn't help but burst into laughter at his own cruel joke.

Trent fires back at Maddison Trent may have been joking here - and it's worth being clear that he absolutely was - but it still shows his ultra competitive spirit.

Although Maddison was obviously just teasing him, the fact remains that his team practically robbed Liverpool of the points a couple of weeks ago.

Whether he's showing it or not, that will have hurt Alexander-Arnold, and Maddison laughing about it would only have riled him further.

While the former Leicester City midfielder has had a good start at Spurs, he shouldn't get too big for his boots.

A single FA Cup is the sole sum of his trophy haul as a senior professional. Alexander-Arnold meanwhile has won pretty much everything there is to win with Liverpool, as well as collecting a host of individual awards.

His brilliant free-kick at Leicester last season did virtually relegate Maddison and his teammates, too. Maddison can strike a ball with the best of them, but he needs to remember just who he's dealing with.
