West Brom draw up 'very connected' plan to flesh out injury hit squad

West Brom have utilised the club's academy to the full this international break.

In the absence of a host of injured first-team players and the departed trio of Semi Ajayi, Grady Diangana and Jayson Molumby who jetted out to various corners of the globe to represent their respective countries, Carlos Corberan looked to the club's generated products.

There were some days as many as EIGHT players who joined up with the senior pros to help carry out regular first-team training sessions and also with a view to being involved this coming week; Albion welcome Plymouth and Queens Park Rangers to The Hawthorns in the space of four days and at least one youngster with minimal first-team experience will make those squads.

During this break, Corberan has called up a host of 21s into his first-team sessions; Fenton Heard, Josh Shaw, Reece Hall, Harry Whitwell, Kevin Mfuamba and Akeel Higgins all partook at various intervals to complement the first-team personnel and aid their own preparations.

"Of course, the academy is key," Corberan reasoned.

"The way our academy is working, we are very connected with them.

With the coach and with the players.

This international break we have had 20 players everyday, or 22.

Eight players of the B team have been working with us, minimum six, maximum eight.

"During the international break we have had trainings of 20 or 22.

One of these players, if everything goes well on Friday, is going to be involved in the first team.

To complete the number of players, one of the players will come with us.

"Despite the raft of injury woes the club are currently having to contend with, Corberan is confident that Albion can still operate in the shape that they have been up to now, although he knows that they may only be one further injury to an attacking player away from that being out of his hands.

"We can still play the way we have been, if I wish to," he explained.

"If we lose one attacking player more, I have one alternative shape in my in my mind that we have enough players for.

When I say enough players, I mean players who can play in the position from the bench.

With the injuries, the next step is for the young players - that one is Tom Fellows, right now.

"We decided to keep him here because he has the potential to be here with us.

He is at a level where he can develop and needs to grow, but I am very pleased with the minutes he played the other day against Birmingham.

He was ready from the bench, he went to the pitch and he was helping the team to attack.

I saw him make a positive impact.

"We have created a squad with not a lot of numbers, with 18 experienced outfield players and two young players.

That is Caleb and Tom.

We have 20 pitch players, 18 with previous experience and two young ones who have the loans.

We have two players in each position.

Normally for the Championship and the number of games, this is not a massive number of players, but it's a squad that we have created within our possibilities.

"Now, we still have experienced centre backs.

That's why Caleb isn't playing.

He is still growing, and he is developing.

He is ready and could be playing, for example for Tom Fellows now his moment has arrived.

Now the option for him to play increases a lot.

"Who is the academy prospect coming through at Albion who excites you most?.
