Dean Ashton on David Moyes at West Ham

Dean Ashton believes David Moyes has done a "fantastic" job as West Ham manager but admits that he understands the fans' frustrations at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have experienced a difficult start to 2024, having gone eight matches in all competitions without a victory before beating Brentford 4-2 on Monday 26 February.

Pressure mounted on Moyes throughout that winless streak, with many calling for his sacking, but the Scot seems to have turned things around in recent weeks, advancing to the Europa League quarter-finals and going four unbeaten in the Premier League.

Speaking live via Sky Sports News on Wednesday (20 March, 10:23am), former Hammers striker Ashton said: "I can understand the point of view from certain supporters about what they're watching, in terms of the style of play. They pay their hard-earned money to watch their side.

"But in terms of what David Moyes has produced, winning the Europa Conference League and getting European football season in and season out, as well as riding high in the Premier League, you cannot doubt how well he's done. He has done a fantastic job."

Does David Moyes deserve more respect at West Ham United? Moyes has been regularly lauded for leading West Ham to their first piece of European silverware in the last four decades, but recent displays seem to have overshadowed that.

Of course, the Hammers manager should be respected for that feat alone, producing a special moment as they beat Fiorentina in Prague, Czechia, to lift the trophy.

However, football is a results-based sport, and when results are not going a team's way, it becomes easy to target the manager, especially with Moyes' preference to play counterattacking football.

West Ham boss David Moyes at the London Stadium David Moyes has found himself under increasing pressure at West Ham United. When it comes off, West Ham can be one of the most dangerous teams in the Premier League, with Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Michail Antonio key to punishing back-tracking defences.

He has the players to produce some very exciting football at the London Stadium, but Moyes is still yet to completely let the shackles loose.
