Phillips: the only way is up
Source:Kumb

West Ham United's on-loan midfielder Kelvin Phillips has the lowest average score of any player to feature in the Premier League so far this year.

According to statistics emporium WhoScored.com, the England midfielder - who was dropped from Gareth Southgate's latest international squad - rated an average 5.91 for his performances at Manchester City and West Ham United, who he joined for the second half of the season back in January. And that is the lowest rating amonst all 290 players to have featured in five Premier League fixtures or more during the current calendar year.

Although clearly a highly-talented individual, Phillips has struggled to regain the form that catapulted him into Gareth Southgate's thinking some years ago since moving to the current league champions, for whom he has barely featured since making a PS45million switch from Leeds United.

Phillips has been some considerable distance away from appearing fully fit since moving to Stratford, but is almost certain to play a role in West Ham's next two matches.

First choice defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez is suspended for both the first leg of the Europa League quarter final against Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham's next Premier League outing against Newcastle United, this weekend.
