Key factor emerges in Kalvin Phillips’ potential Leeds United return
Source:The72

Leeds United are keen on reuniting with Kalvin Phillips but the midfielder would need to take a big wage cut to return to Elland Road, as per the Daily Star. Kalvin Phillips emerged as one of England's standout defensive midfielders during his time at Leeds United. He came on leaps and bounds under Marcelo Bielsa and successfully managed the step up to the Premier League with the Whites.

His performances earned a high-profile move to Manchester City, but the 28-year-old has been unable to find regular minutes under Pep Guardiola. That led to a West Ham loan switch in January.

However, a struggle for form with the Hammers has only led to more questions over his future.

Leeds United have been linked with a reunion swoop for Phillips in the event they win promotion from the Championship. Now, fresh claims have emerged over the possible summer deal.

The Daily Star says that while the Elland Road outfit are interested, Phillips would need a significant cut to his PS150,000-a-week deal. Leeds would not be willing to break their wage structure, and it remains to be seen if the player would take such a cut.

Latest Stories A popular deal? After what he achieved with the Whites before, there's no doubt Phillips would be welcomed back to the club with open arms. He played 234 times across all competitions and chipped in with 14 goals and 13 assists.

It could be just what he needs after a tough couple of seasons too. A lack of game time with Manchester City and a challenging West Ham loan stint means the next move needs to be the right one for him.

There's no doubting that Phillips is a high calibre midfielder on his day, he just needs to gain confidence once more and find a club where he can be comfortable and kick on again. Leeds United could be that club.

Time will tell just how the situation pans out though, with the Whites needing to secure promotion before they can think about an ambitious reunion.
