'Deal could be done' - Report: West Ham want to sign player ready to waive £17.5m pay-off in Jan

Kalvin Phillips would be willing to forfeit his PS17.5million pay-off to depart Manchester City amid his links to West Ham United, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported online (21 October) that the midfielder has accepted the unlikelihood of breaking into Pep Guardiola's midfield and is keen on a move to remain in Gareth Southgate's England plans for the upcoming Euros.

The Sun claim a "deal could be done" if City can get back close to the PS42million Phillips cost from Leeds United in 2022, with the Hammers, Bayern Munich and Newcastle all keen.

For his career, a departure from the Etihad may be in Phillips' best interest, but he may not find game time easy to come by in Stratford either.

The Hammers' new-look midfield after Declan Rice's departure this summer has performed very well this season. James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez have bedded very well under David Moyes and none have done anything to warrant being dropped.

However, the season is long, and if West Ham can secure themselves a good run in the Europa League, they will need quality reinforcements on the bench or to allow others to rest. However, Phillips would not come to West Ham as an immediate starter.

Phillips is still 27, so he has plenty of time to revive his career after his unfortunate spell at City. His inability to break into Pep Guardiola's squad is more of a reflection of their immense quality rather than Phillips' talent, so he would be a useful asset to the Hammers.

However, in his attempts to remain in Southgate's plans for Euro 2024, Phillips may be keen on a move that will see him starting the majority of games, but considering his lack of minutes in recent months, this could prove a challenge.

In and around his PS42million price tag may be too steep for a club that spent the majority of their budget on midfielders this summer, but West Ham will keep their eyes on the situation in the coming months.

In other West Ham news, Insiders have shared the club's stance on a move for Manchester United ace Scott McTominay.
