24-yo Hammer could be finished at the LS with Moyes reportedly chasing £45m star - opinion

West Ham United signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City in January would be really bad news for one Hammer in particular.

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, West Ham are eyeing up a January transfer window move to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Hammers boss David Moyes is clearly keen to bolster his central midfield ranks at the London Stadium, and he has been linked with a move to sign Phillips, 27, on numerous occasions in the past.

If the former Leeds man does rock up at the London Stadium this winter, it could mean the end of the road for Flynn Downes as a West Ham player.

The 24-year-old midfielder is spending the season on loan with Championship club Southampton, although recent claims suggested that he is all set to return to the London Stadium at the end of the season.

However, it seems like Moyes has other ideas in my mind...

And if true, Downes will be cursing his luck. Phillips arriving at the London Stadium would put to bed any pre-conceived notion that the 24-year-old may have had of breaking into the Hammers first-team next season.

Whilst West Ham need to fulfil homegrown player quotas, letting the former Swansea man leave the club would be balanced out by bringing Phillips in.

Man City signed Phillips from Leeds in the summer of 2022 for around PS45 million (BBC).

He has really struggled for any kind of consistent game-time under Pep Guardiola though, and it has been claimed that he will leave the Etihad this winter (TNT).

I really don't think West Ham should be signing Kalvin Phillips though. He's far too injury prone and has barely played any football over the past 15 months.

There are plenty of better, and more durable midfielders out there and available in my opinion. And if I'm being honest, I think I'd prefer Downes to come back at the end of this season, rather than splash out an extortionate fee on Phillips.
