So it wasn't exactly the result he was after. The new QPR boss had his heart set on claiming a win in his first home game in charge after taking over from Gareth Ainsworth.

But the 41-year-old from Catalunya was happy with what he saw in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Bristol City and believes shoots of recovery are already in evidence.

"I was really looking forward to deliver a good performance and a victory... unfortunately we couldn't deliver that victory, but it was special," said Marti Cifuentes after his W12 bow.

"It's not the result we wanted, but at the same time, I'm looking forward to keep building this togetherness that I felt I felt today on the pitch. With the supporters and the players, I think we can be really strong in future at home.

"My job is to make sure that we can start to win games and I think it's a step in the right direction."

Continuing in perfect English and with a rapid speech pattern, a confident Cifuentes continued: "I see a stable team that is trying to have a clear identity - how they want to play from the back and how the players have the courage to ask for the ball, to pass to each other, to try to press high. I think the identity of the team is starting to show up.

"Every day since my arrival has been a strep forward and I feel we are taking the steps, but we need to be critical as well and aware so far it's not been enough to win games in this league. We miss a bit of an end product and the capacity to break lines but I'm sure that if the lads keep working in the way they are, I'm sure we can only get better.

"We definitely need to get better because we need to create more goal chances if we want to win games."

"I've been watching a lot of Championship games in the last years and you can see it's a league with a lot of intensity, with a lot of physicality and duels.

"The tempo of the game can be really up and down and the momentum of a game can change very quickly. But I do think we have the tools within the squad to play the football we want. I'm very confident this will get us the results that we want."

Cifuentes has a couple of weeks to work with the players before their next match at Norwich because of the international break and is looking forward to it.

"The core of the team will stay here so I think it's a good opportunity in the situation we are in, to build this identity on and off the pitch and the mentality and winning culture we want to build in this club. I'm sure it's going to be a good window in which to improve as a team.

"We need to keep the calm. We have players who fit very well with my philosophy and way of playing and the culture of the club. We have a long way to go."
