Manchester United icon Edwin van der Sar praised Bruno Fernandes after his late goal won the game against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

United thought they were in front less than 10 minutes into the game when Scott McTominay fired the ball home but the goal was ruled out for offside after VAR told the referee to head over to the pitchside monitor. From then on it was a slog for the Reds as they struggled to break down a stubborn opposition.

But their concerns were forgotten in stoppage time as Fernandes moved past two Fulham defenders to fire the ball past Bernd Leno at his near post to win the game. The strike sparked jubilant scenes in the away end and sent the Reds, temporarily, up to sixth.

One former player who was a particularly keen observer of proceedings in the capital was Van der Sar. The former Netherlands international represented Fulham between 2001 and 2005 before making the switch to Old Trafford where he retired in 2011.

Held in high regard by both sets of supporters, Van der Sar gave his verdict on social media. He posted: "Though injury time loss for Fulham and this game had a draw written all over, [it was a] quality finish from the captain and three points for Manchester United."

The result may go some way to easing pressure on Erik ten Hag who had experienced two heavy defeats before the win on Saturday. United sit five points outside the top four with Liverpool yet to play this weekend.
