Dermot Gallagher and the Ref Watch panel were unanimous on three big decisions in Rangers' win over Livingston...but it was an 'astonishing' decision in Hearts' visit to Motherwell that really raised the ire.
It was a Premiership weekend dominated, as it often is, by some VAR decisions that only raised more questions over the technology which many players and managers are now growing tired of. Brendan Rodgers was the most recent boss to call for it axed while former top ref Bobby Madden said over the weekend it should be 'thrown in the bin.'
Gallagher and the Sky Sports panel though felt the technology got two of three big decisions right in Rangers' win over Livingston, though the first Rangers penalty was disputed by former grade one official Gallagher. Here's what he and the panel had to say on six contentious calls in the Premiership.
Gallagher compared it to Harry Maguire's disallowed goal for Manchester United against Fulham as he said: "It's similar to the Harry Maguire one last week. He's in an offside position, he clearly goes for the ball and impacts the keeper. Disallowed."
McCausland's 'terrible dive' The second big talking point came when Rangers were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ross McCausland - but many felt the winger went down too easy. James Tavernier crashed his spot-kick off the post anyway but Gallagher reckons whistler McLean got it wrong to point to the spot, and feels VAR should have intervened.
Ross McCausland was deemed to have been fouled He said: "Not a foul. It looks a foul at first but when you see it there...not a foul. He buckles his own legs." Pundit Sue Smith then added: "It's not a foul, he's going down before contact," before Danny Mills said: "If there is any contact...terrible dive."
McCausland no goal McCausland was making his first start for Gers and he had a goal of his own disallowed with Abdallah Sima deemed to have brought down Luiyi de Lucas, before Dessers' shot rebounded to the winger to slam home. Gallagher backed that one as he said: "Sima pushes the first defender on the six-yard line doesn't he? The referee spots that. Disallowed."
Casey's 'astonishing' Boyce wipeout The major controversy on the panel though came from Hearts' 2-1 win at Motherwell when Dan Casey caught Liam Boyce with a Nigel de Jong style foot to the chest. A penalty incredibly wasn't given by ref David Munro and that sparked the most incredulous response of the day from Gallagher.
Dan Casey wasn't penalised for this challenge on Liam Boyce He said: "I was astonished a penalty wasn't given. I was even more astonished the referee went to the screen, saw it a number of times, and stuck with his original decision. A brave referee sticks to his choice if he thinks it's right, but for me, that's a penalty."
And Danny Mills jokingly added: "Minimal contact. There's only four stud marks..."
Rubezic on Kyogo Kyogo took a serious blow to the head with Aberdeen's Slobodan Rubezic clattering into him and the defender was booked for his troubled. It looked a sore one and there were some calls for a more serious punishment but Gallagher believes it was fair enough.
"I don't think it's a red card at all. It was an unfortunate clash of heads, it looks bad, but I don't think it's a red card. It forces Kyogo off, unfortunately."
Boyle penalty shout Martin Boyle also felt he should have had a penalty when he was brought down by Joe Wright and Gallagher reckons he was right to feel aggrieved. "The forward's got a good chance of going through, I think it's a foul," he said.
