Real Madrid kicked off 2024 with a win to start a new calendar year as Antonio Rudiger gave the team a 1-0 win through his late header to overcome Mallorca. Here are three stats which help to highlight some of the talking points from the game.
19: Home matches in a row unbeaten, matching Carlo Ancelotti's record Real Madrid made it 19 home games in a row without defeat as they overcame Mallorca, matching Carlo Ancelotti's club record. They do so with a record of 16 wins and three draws from 19 games, which matches the run of 14 wins and five draws between April 2022 and February 2023.
The Italian coach has now overseen back-to-back winning runs on home turf and will be looking to extend this run even further to 20 games when Almeria come to visit the capital later in January.
This was also the third time that Real Madrid have deployed the roof at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu since it was installed, following the previous uses against Getafe in September and Villarreal in December. To date, the team have a 100% win record with three wins from three games using the roof.
0.46: xG in the first half for Real Madrid Only once this season have Real Madrid recorded a lower first-half xG, against Osasuna in October, and on that occasion, Los Blancos did manage to score and followed up with a second period where they produced 3.18 xG. This time around, the gap was not so profound, but Real Madrid again upped their game in the second period.
The second 45 minutes produced 1.34 xG for the home side, substantially more, with 0.82 xG coming purely from Brahim Diaz's inexplicable diving header miss which hit the woodwork and bounced back out.
In the first 45, Real Madrid only registered slightly more than Mallorca's 0.38 xG, but in the second period the visitors recorded just 0.13 with only two shots. As the game wore on, Real Madrid dominated more and more and eventually shut out the side from the Balearic Islands.
2: Antonio Rudiger has only scored two LALIGA goals, both at home against Mallorca German powerhouse Antonio Rudiger wasn't the man who many expected to open the scoring for Real Madrid, but he did just that as he got forward at a set piece to head in and give the home team the three points against Mallorca.
It was a scene which brought back memories of Rudiger's only other LALIGA goal, against the same opposition in the same fixture in his debut season in 2022/23. Then, he also scored with his head to give the home team a goal, though on that occasion it made the scoreline 4-1 in injury time.
Since then, Rudiger has scored only once, against Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League, and he continues to ender himself to the Real Madrid fans who celebrated by chanting his name around the Bernabeu.
