Real Madrid won 3-2 against FC Twente to pick up their first win after six consecutive defeats on the road in the UEFA Women's Champions League. The problems while defending a set-pieces still persisted as Las Blancas had to persevere in order to win the game against the Dutch side.
Below are my immediate thoughts and analysis, along with some highlights. A post-match podcast will follow.
Alberto Toril once again rotated his side with Shei Garcia and Rocio Galvez coming in defence and Signe Bruun and Linda Caicedo starting in attack. Sandie Toletti received her first start since returning from injury. Toril continues his streak of having not started the same striker in two consecutive games this season so far. FC Twente replicated their press from the first half in the first leg, causing Toril's side a lot of problems while building from the back. Apart from Twente's intense press, the spacing between Real Madrid players in their off ball structure seemed very off, allowing the Dutch side to play through them quite easily. Madrid's struggle while defending set-pieces were evident once again. In the 29th minute, Alieke Tuin's brilliant delivery from a free-kick was met by Jaimy Ravensbergen at the far post completely unmarked to give them the much-deserved lead after a spell of meaningful possession in the opening 30 minutes. While the possession was fairly contested, Las Blancas saw less of the ball and looked lost in the midfield in the first half. Neither Leupolz nor Toletti looked their best and struggled with their positioning today. The duo lacked the synergy to plug gaps and allowed Twente to easily play through at times. Real Madrid continued to attack down the left-hand side with Linda Caicedo being the primary outlet. The young Colombian winger showcased her true abilities and created opportunities with her carries. She managed to equalize the game before half-time after a blocked shot fell to her kindly from close range. It was a move started on the left with Olga, with the first shot in the sequence being taken by the Colombian herself. Caicedo's perseverence was the only bright spot in Madrid's otherwise disjointed attack. She switched to the right-hand side momentarily and created Madrid's second in the 71st minute off of another ball-carrying sequence. Her low-driven ball into the box was met with a powerful strike from Signe Bruun from 10 yards out, giving Real Madrid the lead for the first time in the game. Alba Redondo once again proved a valuable asset off the bench, scoring Real Madrid's third goal in the injury time. The Spaniard showcased her qualities when running in behind to latch onto through-balls in behind. Her pace proved deadly against tired legs and she was able to showcase her finishing in 1v1 situations on the run. FC Twente managed a late late goal thanks to a sensational strike from the substitute Sophie Te Brake. The young Dutchwoman absolutely belted a venomous strike from outside the box after Amanda Andradottir set up the shot. Andradottir was brilliant throughout the game and caused a lot of problems. Her minute change of pace and ability to cut in and generate space for her shots was on full display. She was the primary threat carrier for FC Twente in this game. While the defenders didn't join the goalscoring party, Maelle Lakrar was sensational in defence. She made five clearances, four interceptions and one crucial block to deny Twente the equalizer late in the game. Her ball-carrying was crucial in helping Madrid break out of opposition's high press.
