Xabi Alonso could deal $49m transfer blow to Liverpool as Real Madrid eyes Mohamed Salah 'heir'
Source:Liverpool

Liverpool's players have been in action for their respective countries over the past several days. Dominik Szoboszlai was in top form for Hungary, scoring twice and providing an assist in a 3-1 win over Montenegro, while Mohamed Salah was getting swarmed by pitch invaders for Egypt.

Virgil van Dijk played for the Netherlands in the 1-0 win against Ireland in Amsterdam on November 18. More of Liverpool's stars will be in action today, with England set to face North Macedonia in Skopje. Trent Alexander-Arnold could start for Gareth Southgate's side, while Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Alisson are all likely to feature for their countries in the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 qualifiers tomorrow.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that all of his players return to Anfield free of injury, with the mammoth game against Man City on Saturday set to test the Reds' title credentials.

A win for Liverpool against City would prove that Klopp's new-look side is the real deal this season, and after the disappointment of last season, the corner could be turned and the future more than bright.

Yet Klopp needs to hope that his men return from the international break without any major fitness issues, which is not always the case, with Andy Robertson still out for some time following shoulder surgery, a result of an injury picked up on the previous round of international fixtures.

Here is the Liverpool.com take on some of the biggest stories around European football today ahead of Saturday's return to action against City.

Real Madrid eyeing Leroy Sane Real Madrid is already planning for next summer. Los Blancos has been linked to Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies in recent weeks (via AS), but according to Spanish source Sport, the club is also keen on Leroy Sane.

The German winger has been in scintillating form for Bayern this season. Sane has 16 goal contributions already at this stage of the season, and has struck up a brilliant partnership with England striker Harry Kane. Sane's contract is expiring in the summer of 2025, so Bayern needs to tie the 27-year-old down, or contemplate selling him next summer.

Prices start from PS59.95

Nike Liverpool.com says: Sane has been in tremendous form for Bayern this season, but it's debatable whether Real Madrid needs him at this stage. A No.9 is likely a summer priority for Florentino Perez, with Kylian Mbappe no doubt still top of Perez's list after chasing him for years.

If Sane is of interest to Real though, it could be a blow to Liverpool. The Mirror claimed last month that the Reds are looking at him as a possible heir to Mohamed Salah, meaning they could be involved in yet another transfer battle with the Spanish giant. Speaking of which...

Xabi Alonso could deal Jeremie Frimpong blow to Liverpool Liverpool has entered the fray to sign Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong, but faces a challenge from a former Liverpool player.

Frimpong has impressed at Bayer Leverkusen this season under coach Xabi Alonso, and Spanish outlet Depor states that should Alonso take over from Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid boss next season, he wants to take the former Celtic player with him.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also said to be interested in signing Frimpong, who is valued at $49m (PS39m/EUR45m) by website Transfermarkt. Frimpong has scored three goals and provided six assists for Leverkusen this season.

Liverpool.com says: The last thing Liverpool will want is to get into an arms race with Real Madrid and Chelsea for Frimpong. Moreover, with Liverpool possessing Trent Alexander-Arnold and cover in the likes of Joe Gomez, it's arguable that Frimpong isn't needed at this juncture.
