Real Madrid’s top priority in the summer 2024 transfer window isn’t Kylian Mbappé

Real Madrid were unable to capture the LaLiga title in the 2022/23 season, thanks to a very improved Barcelona under new manager Xavi.

However, Los Blancos are optimistic they can win it all again in 2023/24 despite losing Karim Benzema, as Jude Bellingham's presence - along with the addition of Joselu - should be enough to keep the attack firing.

But now, Real's concerns are with the back line.

Their center backs have been dropping with injuries, Dani Carvajal has improved but remains a long-term question mark at right back with his own serious injury concerns, and the left back position hasn't been addressed as hoped despite the return of Fran Garcia.

Therefore, bolstering the defense is paramount, with the fullback positions standing out as the biggest need.

And according to a report from Manu de Juan of Diario AS, Real Madrid are insistent on Alponsho Davies as a solution, calling him their main target at the position.

Davies is in the discussion for being the absolute best left back in world football and has been a dream target for Los Merengues since some point during the 2022/23 season.

Ferland Mendy is no longer a part of the picture for Real despite a solid start to life in the Spanish capital, as his deficiencies on the ball have proven too much to surmount.

Meanwhile, Real haven't found the right balance between attack and defense with their younger options over the years, such as Miguel Gutierrez (now at Girona) and Fran Garcia.

The latter has shown signs of his quality in the attack this season, but Real dream of a more secure starting option.

Davies won't be easy to sign from Bayern Munich, but there is hope he could be available in 2024 if Madrid push hard enough to convince him to try a new challenge.

The 22-year-old has been one of the best left backs in the world for the last five years now, and it is remarkable to think that he is still a U23 player and that he started his career as a winger.

Davies is secure in defense, rarely losing one-on-ones or getting caught out of possession. His final ball will never be elite, but he can still create a bevy of chances and generate assists on sheer volume and progressive ability alone.

Basically, he has the traits to be exactly what Real Madrid need because of his defensive prowess, on-the-ball progression, and work rate.

What he lacks in the kind of technique Marcelo once brought to the table at the position, he makes up for in pretty much everything else.

Sometimes he can frustrate even his Bayern teammates with his deliveries, but those are quietly improving. He is still young.

It is wise for Real Madrid to circle Davies as a priority transfer target in 2024. He looks like their ideal solution at the left back position, and the constant flirting between the club and Davies' agent makes it seem like a move is realistic.

Soon, get ready for everyone to talk about Kylian Mbappe again. The saga will never end. But if Real are smart, they will realize that the fullback positions should be their key priority.

It's not that they couldn't use another goal-scorer to help out, but, first and foremost, they need a true star on the defensive flanks. Preferably two. And realistically, there isn't a better target for them than Alphonso Davies.
