Aston Villa player ratings vs Fulham as McGinn and Tielemans shine in 3-1 win
Source:Birminghammail

Aston Villa have equalled a club record of 21 Premier League victories in a calendar year by beating Fulham 3-1 at Villa Park.

The result extends Villa's home winning run in the league to 13 matches - a feat last achieved 40 years ago - while the club have now won six consecutive home league games in the top-flight for the first time since 1932. Unai Emery's side remain in fifth position after collecting 25 points in 12 games before the November international break.

Before coming back from a goal behind to beat AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, Villa fell to their first league defeat since early September, losing 2-0 at Nottingham Forest. Having missed the opportunity to climb into the top four, Villa were keen to put things right against Fulham, who have now won on only one of their last 20 trips to B6.

Emery's side started on the front foot and should have forced an early advantage through Moussa Diaby, but his effort inside the box was saved by Bernd Leno. Villa were then initially awarded a penalty as Ollie Watkins' effort - which was heading towards goal - struck Timothy Castagne's arm, but VAR overturned the decision.

Fulham grew in confidence after the host's bright start, but just as they looked to get a foothold in the match, Villa broke the deadlock. Tielemans pulled the ball across the box towards Diaby, but Antonee Robinson turned the ball into his own net.

Then, 15 minutes after taking the lead, McGinn doubled his side's advantage by beating Bernd Leno from outside the box. It was a huge challenge for the Cottagers to take anything from the game after considering Villa came into the match unbeaten in the past 19 Premier League games in which they took the lead, including seven wins out of seven this season.

Villa made Fulham's task even harder when they scored their third just after the hour mark. Fresh from off the bench, Leon Bailey started a counter-attack and combined with McGinn in the final third, before the Jamaica international found Ollie Watkins at the back post.

Raul Jimenez scored a consolation goal on the 70th minute as he tapped in Robinson's pass after the left-back beat Villa's offside trap.

He made a top save to deny Jimenez early in the second half, even if Fulham's move was later called offside. He'll be frustrated not to have kept a clean sheet. 8

Matty Cash

He was an outlet down the right all afternoon. Going the other way, Cash made a few strong tackles which helped set the tone. He floored Willian with a perfectly-timed challenge as the away side went to break after falling a goal behind in the first period. 7

Ezri Konsa

Another stellar showing from the centre-back, who rarely puts a foot wrong. He picked up his second caution of the season for time-wasting, which was harsh. 8

Pau Torres

More passes and long-range pings will be added to his highlight reel after today. He's grown into the Villa shirt in recent weeks and plays a vital role in how Emery's side build-up in possession. 8

Lucas Digne

Kept his width well and used the ball effectively. He has been one of the more underrated stars of Villa's brilliant start to the campaign. 8

Boubacar Kamara

Mopped up in the middle of the park and did his job well, as he so often does. Kamara, like Luiz, is a key cog in the structure Emery is playing with. 8

Douglas Luiz

Played a key pass which allowed Tielemans to get in behind for Villa's opening goal. Every touch he takes tends to be spot on even when multiple opposition players are hunting for possession. 9

John McGinn

Outstanding. Vintage McGinn. He has the unenviable task of dealing with Palhinha, but he bullied the Portuguese all afternoon. Scored his fifth goal of the season in all competitions. 9*

Youri Tielemans

Played from the left today and impressed throughout. His influence on the game diminished somewhat in the second period, but as far as first league starts go, he performed very well. 8

Moussa Diaby

Should have given Villa an early lead inside six minutes, but his effort from inside the area was straight at Leno. He was replaced on the hour mark for Bailey. 7

Ollie Watkins

He had one chance all game and took it. Led the line well by setting the press and looking for opportunities to link up with his partner in crime, Diaby. 7

Leon Bailey (for Diaby, 60'): Made an instant impact by assisting Watkins. He should have scored Villa's fourth late on, but he missed an open goal. 7
