How Chelsea's attack could look next season if they sign Victor Osimhen - opinion

Reports today have once again linked Chelsea with a move for one of the best strikers in world football right now.

The Blues are reportedly in talks over a potential deal for Victor Osimhen, with a loan with option to buy being discussed.

It is thought Napoli will want an obligation included if Chelsea qualify for the Champions League, however the deal is now looking far more appealing now than it did a few weeks ago.

If the deal was to be completed, attention would then turn to how Enzo Maresca feels he can get the Nigerian into his starting side and get the best out of the players around him.

Here's The Chelsea Chronicle's top three ways the Blues could line up with Osimhen in their ranks.

Osimhen's skillset very much suits that of an out-and-out number nine, and this would likely see him need two of Chelsea's best players alongside him in the attack.

Cole Palmer is going to be the first name on the teamsheet next season, and he played a lot of his football on the right of attack to great effect.

Christopher Nkunku was unable to make the impact he would have liked last season due to injury, however he has hit the ground running this pre-season.

The Frenchman's versatility makes him very easy to fit into any setup right now.

Palmer - Osimhen - Jackson

Leaning into Nkunku's versatility, he has actually been featuring in some form of midfield role in the pre-season friendlies so far, and could easily crop up there again.

This would open up a space again for Nicolas Jackson, who normally played down the middle last season under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, he showed a great ability to feature on the left when required, and could easily continue to do that on a more regular basis.

His direct running would cause full-backs real problems, and may be key if the left-back behind him is chosen to invert into midfield.

Palmer - Jackson - Nkunku

Despite the magnitude of the name of Osimhen, there are absolutely no guarantees at this point that he fits into what the new manager is looking to do at Stamford Bridge.

It was previously reported that Maresca was not interested in signing Osimhen, with there concerns about how he would work in the system coming in.

In that case, it is likely Jackson would remain up front going into next season, with Nkunku and Palmer supporting alongside him.

This would also allow the Blues a much more conventional midfield trio that can do a far better job in the defensive side of the game.
