Liverpool receive new Mohamed Salah penalty referee verdict after Chelsea controversy
Source:Liverpool Echo:

There were numerous controversial calls made by John Brooks and Michael Oliver during Liverpool's clash against Chelsea

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Levi Colwill was adjudged to have fouled Jones inside the Chelsea box. Oliver confirmed Brooks' call, deeming the Blues defender's contact sufficient for a spot-kick.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch show, Gallagher claimed that the match official made the correct call, and he pointed out Colwill's guilty-looking expression. The former Premier League referee said: "I think it's a penalty, he doesn't get the ball.

"The VAR deemed that Sanchez won the ball and no foul was committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

Gallagher, again, agreed with Oliver and Brooks, saying: "I think it's a good intervention. Many, many people say is it re-refereeing? Well, as I've said many times to you, if I see that in VAR, I think, 'well the goalkeeper has got the ball first and Jones has gone into him'.

"I obviously think it's not a penalty, so I would say to the referee it's not a penalty. It's difficult isn't it? Because the goalkeeper definitely gets the ball, Jones goes into him, there's going to be a collision. But for me, this is the angle, definitely gets the ball first."

Chelsea also had a penalty appeal of their own waved away when Trent Alexander-Arnold brought down Jadon Sancho. On the incident, Gallagher said: "I didn't think it was a foul, I just didn't think it was a foul. Both players are tangled, I would be very, very surprised if that was given as a penalty."

On the incident between Colwill and Mohamed Salah, the former Premier League official brushed off claims that Oliver and Brooks made the wrong call to not award a penalty. Gallagher said: "Not for me, he slips just as he goes to kick the ball. I don't think it's a dive but I think he slipped into it, not a dive for me."

Then, on arguably the most controversial call of the tie, when Tosin Adarabioyo brought down Diogo Jota on the halfway line, Gallagher outlined the significance of Colwill's proximity to the situation. He said: "I think it's a number of things.

"Firstly, the player is not in possession of the ball, you have to say, will he get in possession of the ball? Possibly but Colwill is alongside him, so it's a footrace between the two. Direction of the ball.

"The ball is going towards the corner flag, it's moving away, so he's going away from goal, so if he'd got the ball, he'd still have that. Distance from goal, again I felt that Colwill will have that chance to make up that ground if he gets the ball first, so there's too many variables."
