Home game against Stoke City to be Remembrance fixture
Source:Ccfc

Coventry City will be honouring Armed Forces past and present at our home game against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

Taking place on Armistice Day, Saturday's fixture will see Coventry City honour and remember our service men and women past and present.

Saturday will mark 105 years to the day since the signing of the Armistice agreement which saw the end to fighting in World War I - a conflict in which over 16 million people died.

This is also our closest game to the Coventry Blitz anniversary, which will also be remembered.

There will still be a minute silence before kick-off and players will be wearing the Poppy on the front of their shirts, with the Club donating these shirts to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal - details how fans can support will be confirmed shortly.

Local Armed Forces regimental standard bearers will be pitchside with cadets, alongside Royal British Legion and bugler Band Sergeant Hugh Sutherland, of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Warwickshire, who will play the Last Post during the pre-match Minute Silence.

The Poppy features on the front cover of Saturday's programme PUSB, where names of players who served in World War I and II will be printed.

There is also going to be fundraising for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, with fans encouraged to donate on the day at the stadium or online.

In 2020, Coventry City formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant. The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. In signing the covenant, the Sky Blues committed written pledges of support to the Armed Forces community.

This year, Coventry City were awarded a Bronze award in the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) - this scheme encourages employers to support defence and inspire other organisations to do the same, and recognises the Club in doing so.

The Coventry Blitz of 14th November 1940 was a night that changed the City of Coventry forever as around 500 German planes embarked on operation 'Moonlight Sonata', a bombing raid which caused utter devastation to the city and its people. The official death toll from that night was 554, but the true figure was likely to have been much higher, with many Coventrians missing and unaccounted for. At least 1000 more people were injured, and the entire city was profoundly affected by the events of that night.
