‘Where can I go?’ Sky Sports pundits clash over whether Ipswich should’ve had a penalty vs Everton
Source:Everton News

Everton have a pretty chequered history with the Premier League's officials, but they certainly have them to thank after their most recent match.

Although, it was simply a correct decision made, which is their job.

Regardless, it has commanded great scrutiny, particularly when compared to an earlier example in the Toffees' most recent match before their trip to Ipswich Town.

It seems even those on Sky Sports are torn.

Should Ipswich Town have had a penalty vs Everton? This week's iteration of Sky Sports' Ref Watch is one that Evertonians can finally skip, given they were not involved in any controversies that left them feeling wronged.

A routine win, things could have been much different had Ipswich Town been gifted the penalty they were given whilst the score was just 1-0.

Dermot Gallagher kickstarted the debate by seeking to shut down any complaints, backing the referee by stating: 'This is a carbon copy of Calvert-Lewin and Burn the other week, when I explained the attacker caught the defender. The same thing has happened.'

However, Sue Smith, who thought Everton should have had a penalty for that Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty incident against Newcastle United, stood firm on her stance: 'McNeil puts his leg across Clarke before he's about to shoot. You have to argue for Ipswich there. I think it's a penalty.'

Stephen Warnock was a bit more skeptical though: 'I'm not so sure. I think he just stops. McNeil is in that vicinity of, where can I go?'

VAR shows consistency in the Premier League at last Whether it is a penalty or not, at the very least the decision at Portman Road represents consistency in Premier League officiating that many have been craving.

After all, had the decision to award the spot kick on Saturday stood, it would have been a tragedy given the exact same situation occurred the match week earlier against Newcastle United.

There, Dan Burn got himself in between the man and the ball, forcing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to strike the back of his leg. As such, no penalty was given.

At the very least teams will know where they stand if the officials remain consistent on these important decisions.
