Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has shared a message of support to France teammate Dayot Upamecano, who suffered racial abuse after Bayern Munich's recent loss.

The German club suffered consecutive losses this past week. The first came against title rivals Bayer Leverkusen - managed by potential new Reds manager Xabi Alonso - leaving Thomas Tuchel's men five points adrift in their domestic league.

They then travelled to Rome to play Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, however that ended in a 1-0 defeat. Upamecano gave away a penalty kick and was sent off for his challenge, allowing the Italian team to take the advantage.

That led to a minority overstepping the mark and directing sickening racial abuse towards the central defender - acts which have since been condemned.

On their club channels, Bayern posted the message: "FC Bayern strongly condemn the racist comments being directed towards Dayot Upamecano on social media. Anyone who comments hateful words such as these is no fan of our club. We're all behind you, Upa!"

"Criticism is part of football but racism has no place anywhere. Whether in a stadium, or on social media. Racism has no place anywhere. 2024 and we still have to repeat it."

This allowed Konate - who spent four years together with Upamecano at RB Leipzig before going their separate ways, then has since remained close to on the international stage - to repost the message and offer his own support.

As well as supporting his friend, this week Konate has been working towards his return to action following a one-match suspension. Jurgen Klopp confirmed the 24-year-old is back in contention for Saturday lunchtime's trip to Brentford.
