Liverpool derailed by surprise injury news as Man City eye title race charge

Manchester City's preparations for a title race charge have had a boost after the news that Liverpool could have suffered a triple injury setback.

City stumbled slightly in the Premier League at the weekend, held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea. In contrast, rivals Arsenal and Liverpool both had handsome wins, over Burnley (5-0) and Brentford (4-1) respectively.

Pep Guardiola's men face Brentford at the Etihad tomorrow night, looking to leapfrog Arsenal and also close the gap on leaders Liverpool to just one point. The two teams then meet in a mouthwatering showdown at Anfield on March 10th.

And reports this morning claimed that Liverpool are worried about potential injuries to Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota, as well as in-form midfielder Curtis Jones. Jota limped out of Saturday's 4-1 win against Brentford and won't be able to play in Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

The Portugal forward damaged his knee in the first half of the game when Christian Norgaard from Brentford landed on him. They were both trying to get the ball at the Gtech Stadium. Jota had to leave the game in London with a brace on his knee.

Reports from Egypt suggest that Salah has picked up a muscle injury, just like he did when playing for Egypt against Ghana last month.

Ahmed Shoubir, a TV host in Egypt, told OnTimeSports: "I have sad news, I learned that Salah suffered an injury at the end of the meeting between Liverpool and Brentford and renewed injury suffered during the camp of the Egyptian national team. Salah unfortunately will not be able to play the next Liverpool Premier League match against Luton Town. This is my information and I hope that the news is not true, but it is largely true."

Salah, will be checked over by the team's medical staff as he returns from injury. Klopp will provide an update on his condition in his Tuesday press conference ahead of Luton's visit to Anfield on Wednesday night.

Jota had a first check-up over the weekend and is set for more tests on Monday. News from Portugal on Sunday night suggested that the frontman might be out of action for about two months, meaning he could return for the title run-in.

"Diogo looks probably the worst [of the injuries at Brentford]," Klopp said after the game. "I didn't see it back but I heard the pictures didn't look great. We have to see there."

"Curtis got a knock on the lower part of his shin, above the ankle," Klopp explained. "We will see what that means. It's what he felt but he wasn't 100% sure. That Curtis cannot play on tells you it must be something because he would have played on at all costs actually."
