Mohamed Salah's 'biggest reason for signing new Liverpool deal' comes to light

Mohamed Salah is out of contract at the end of the season, but Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is confident the forward will sign a new deal and remain at Anfield

Jamie Carragher has pinpointed one major reason why he believes Mohamed Salah will end up signing a new contract at Liverpool.

Salah is in the final year of his contract and will be able to negotiate with non-English clubs in January, but Carragher believes the forward will ultimately remain at Anfield in a bid to cement his legacy by breaking as many records as he can.

The 32-year-old moved up to join-ninth alongside Jermain Defoe on the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers with 162 goals after scoring in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Chelsea. Salah is just 13 goals behind seventh-placed Thierry Henry and 15 behind Frank Lampard and Carragher believes he will want to finish even higher on that list.

"He'll have an eye on Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard by the end of this season, I would imagine," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "I think stats like this are one of the biggest reasons why Mo Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

Speaking back in September, Salah revealed that "nobody in the club has talked to me" about his future yet. "I was coming to the game, I was saying, 'look, it could be the last time'," he said after Liverpool's win over Manchester United.

"Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts so I was just like, 'OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season'. I feel I am free to play football - we will see what happens next year."

And Liverpool boss Arne Slot has insisted the uncertainty surrounding the trio's future is not a distraction. "It's again the boring answer you are going to get from me as long as there is no news. We don't talk about contract situations here," Slot said last month.

"Is it a distraction? No, it isn't because I'm fully focused on the individuals and the team. They are part of the team and I'm trying to work with them in the best possible way to get the best out of them. It's not a distraction for me at all."
