Liverpool told what they'll be getting when loan forward returns

Stoke City boss Narcis Pelach has been pleased with what he's seen of youngster Lewis Koumas since he arrived at the club last month, indeed so much so that he hopes others in the squad follow his lead in his application - but there remain many lessons in game management and positions for the teenager to take in.

Stoke borrowed Koumas, son of former Welsh international Jason, was borrowed from Premier League title pace-setters Liverpool in the summer transfer window. He made an immediate impact when scoring on his Championship debut in the 2-1 defeat to West Brom at the beginning of the season. He then contributed a goal and an assist as Stoke ran riot in the EFL Cup at Middlesbrough.

On Saturday, Koumas played his part in the final third, joining leader of the line Tom Cannon and Million Manhoef in attack and displaying plenty of energy and enthusiasm, as well as a bravery which caused him to require treatment when he appeared to take an attempted clearance in the throat when applying pressure to the Norwich back-line. Koumas continued to buzz right up until he was forced off with fatigue.

Pelach has liked what he's seen of the young gun, who scored freely during his time in the various Liverpool youth teams and who also bagged on his maiden senior appearance, in the FA Cup against Southampton last season. Clearly, for someone so young, there remains room for more maturity and game understanding, something Pelach intends to invest in Koumas before his Anfield return next summer.

"Very good. He's 18," Pelach said. "He needs to improve his defensive game and we're trying to work on the details because he doesn't control his steps very well, so his defensive position is not great, but his energy and speed and the willpower is impressive. I wanted to change him, but he kept saying he was fine - and then I saw him cramping.

"He's 18, he just wants to play the game. It's nice to see. We need a lot of Lewis Koumases in our squad and players that if, they're not perfect today, that's fine as long as they want to do things.

"I have to say, honestly, that I'm very pleased with him. It's not just in the games but the training sessions as well. He says yes to everything you tell him, he wants to improve. There are no excuses. He is a guy without excuses. With newer generations, it's very easy for kids to say 'yes, but...' or 'if' - with Lewis, it's not like that, which is very good. I think we will get him better with the other stuff."
