Arsenal await William Saliba ban decision with Liverpool and Newcastle United tests looming
Source:Chronicle Live:

Arsenal are awaiting a Premier League decision over the length of William Saliba's ban following his red card at Bournemouth on Saturday. The French defender was sent off after a VAR review with the 23-year-old dragging down Cherries striker Evanilson.

The yellow card referee Rob Jones initially showed to Saliba was changed to a red on advice from VAR, meaning he will now serve a suspension. Straight red cards can carry up to a three-match ban, but these are usually restricted to violent conduct offences.

Saliba could be handed just a one-match ban by the Premier League, meaning he would be available to face Newcastle United at St James' Park on November 2. He would miss the Gunners' game against Liverpool next weekend, but would be free to play in their Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night.

It is the third red card Arsenal have received this season, with Leandro Trossard and Declan Rice also dismissed earlier this term. Regardless of Saliba's availability, Arteta could still have some issues to resolve for the game with Newcastle next month.

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard both missed the defeat at Bournemouth, along with defender Jurrien Timber. Odegaard could return against Liverpool next week, while Saka remains a doubt having picked up an injury on England duty.

If Saliba is suspended, then Jakub Kiwior is likely to partner Gabriel at the heart of the Arsenal defence. The game will the third of three testing fixtures for Eddie Howe's Newcastle following their 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, with two games against Chelsea next up.

United face Enzo Maresca's side at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League next Sunday before hosting the Blues in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie on Wednesday, October 30.
