Luton Town man fumes at Nottingham Forest and Everton FFP 'mockery'
Source:Nottinghampost

Andros Townsend claims the current situation regarding Everton and Nottingham Forest's points deduction appeals is making 'a mockery' of the end to the season.

The Luton Town winger is currently embroiled in a battle for survival in the Premier League relegation zone, with the Hatters' victory over Bournemouth at the weekend lifting them level on points with Forest and closer to the Toffees.

That margin closed even further on Monday when Everton were docked a further two points for breaching Profitability & Sustainability Rules - their second penalty of the season and one which now leaves them on 27 points, compared to Luton and the Reds' 25.

However, both Everton - who have now been docked eight and Forest, who were hit with a four point sanction - are appealing their punishments meaning the actual final table might not be known until after the last game of the season is played.

And speaking on BBC 5Live's Monday Night Club, Townsend hit out at the process and the fact penalties were not laid down when the rules were formulated.

"For me I think it makes a mockery of the Premier League, I am not advocating teams to get deductions or points back or what-have-you but when you announce the charge, you have to be certain.

"If there is an appeals committee why don't the Premier League say 'Everton, we have our case, you put your case together and we go straight to the appeals committee'. Why are we doing this one charge, one points deduction and then we are going to the appeals committee? It doesn't make sense."

He went on to add: "When you are announcing PSR or whatever it is and you are announcing punishments, at the start why would you not have blanket punishments? Like, administration back in the day, everyone knew it was ten points. Why did they not set this up at the start, why are we having this nonsense now mid-way through the season...

"I think for a billion pound product that the Premier League is it is amateurish not to have something written down."

The Premier League have put in place a backstop date of May 24 - five days after the final round of fixtures for this season - to conclude the situations of both Forest and Everton.
