Man City star named England vice captain behind Harry Kane

The right-back was appointed Manchester City skipper at the start of the 2023/24 campaign following the departure of Ilkay Gundogan. He led Pep Guardiola's team to another Premier League in his first season as captain.

Several reports, including in the Daily Mail, have claimed that Walker has been entrusted as England's second-choice captain for the championships in Germany, a role previously held by Jordan Henderson who was left out of the squad.

Walker is among England's most experienced players this summer having represented the Three Lions in four previous major tournaments. He made his international debut in 2011 and only first-choice captain Harry Kane has earned more caps from the current squad.

The Bayern Munich striker has played 91 times for his country, eight more than his former Tottenham Hotspur team-mate.

Walker is likely to start at right-back when England take on Serbia in their group opener on Sunday, despite the immense competition for places. Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the squad, while Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa have deputised on the right of a back four in the past. After this weekend's clash, Gareth Southgate's side face Denmark and Slovenia in Group C.

As for Walker, the 34-year-old had a mixed season for City by his usually high standards, but ended the campaign well and made 47 appearances across 2023/24. Only Rodri and Phil Foden made more starts or played more minutes for the Blues this season.
