‘Not helping’: Alan Shearer left frustrated by how one Man City player is being used at the Euros

Alan Shearer has suggested that one particular Manchester City player is not being used correctly by his country in the Euros.

Looking back over the previous domestic season, Pep Guardiola's side secured their sixth Premier League trophy in seven years.

Now though, numerous City players are currently representing their countries in their 2024 European Championship in Germany.

With the first round of opening group games almost complete, one specific City star, who featured for his country in their opening match of the tournament, has found himself being the subject of conversation for how he fared in his latest international appearance.

He said: "The problem that Phil Foden has got is that he is not a left-sided player, I don't think. I know he plays there for Manchester City, but it's not his best position.

"But what is not helping him at the minute is through no fault of anyone because we haven't got a naturally left-footed left-back, Kieran Trippier is playing left-back. And when he gets the ball, his body position is to take the ball with his right foot.

"Okay. So, he would open the ball up and all of a sudden, you are that way, you can ping it out to the left winger. Because if Anthony Gordon was there, that's naturally what he would do. He would perhaps go on the outside.

"Phil wants the ball. His game is getting the ball to feet and doing his bit with the ball, passing and shooting and doing whatever by coming inside. Now, that's not particularly helping him."

Foden has proved himself to be most effective in a central attacking role Looking back over Sunday's win against Serbia, Foden completed the full 90 minutes in a wide-left role.

In his latest season with City, the Englishman only played 10 of the 53 games he appeared in across all competitions as a left-winger.

Even though he scored three goals and delivered four assists across those 10 games, the 24-year-old scored 13 goals across the 15 games he played as an attacking-midfielder.

Having been named the Premier League Player of the Season, Foden also found himself being picked as Shearer's standout player of the campaign, with the pundit describing him as being "unplayable" at times.

With all of that in mind, we feel that Gareth Southgate is not able to get the best out of the City star when playing him on the left.
