UEFA have charged Manchester City midfielder Rodri for his celebrations in light of Spain's Euro 2024 celebrations.

The 28-year-old and captain Alvaro Morata will be the subject of an investigation from the governing body after their chants relating to Gibraltar. After arriving in Madrid following their 2-1 European Championships final win over England, La Roja received a hero welcome in Madrid, but the celebrations were overshadowed by chants that sparked outrage.

Rodri, who won Player of the Tournament, was captured chanting, which translated to: "It's Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish." Gibraltar is an enclave in the south of Spain but has been under British rule since 1713, but Spain continues to claim sovereignty of the territory.

The country has been a full member of UEFA since 2013 and has competed in previous World Cup and European Championships qualification campaigns. And the chant was slammed by the Gibraltar FA who made a request to UEFA to sanction the Spanish players involved.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that proceedings have been opened. In a statement, UEFA said: "Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations against Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante and Albaro Morta for the conduct that occurred during the public presentation of the 2024 UEFA European Championship trophy in Madrid on July 15 2024."

UEFA confirmed that four charges have been made against Rodri and the new AC Milan striker, Morata, including general principle of conduct, violating the basic rule of decent conduct, using sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature, and bringing the sport of football and UEFA into disrepute.

"The Association is this morning taking advice on the filing of a complaint to European Football's governing body, UEFA, in relation to the unacceptable chanting and songs, relating to Gibraltar, sung by Spain's Men's National Team players after winning Euro 2024. Football has no place for behaviour of this nature."
