But there is a new hierarchy at Old Trafford as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co get their feet under the desk. The INEOS chief did offer Greenwood a lifeline when asked about the prospect of the young forward returning to United, who has now had his say over plans for next season.

The Sun claim that Greenwood would turn down a permanent move to Barcelona if United make it clear that he can return to the club. He is said to believe that he has a debt to the fans and Erik ten Hag, having not played for the team in over two years.

Greenwood has five goals and five assists for Getafe this season and has continued to impress on his return to football, prompting United to take notice and consider whether they should be letting him leave while they have a lack of strength in depth in forward positions.

United want PS34m for Greenwood but it remains to be seen if his potential suitors are prepared to meet that valuation. The price tag and his wage demands are out of reach for Getafe, despite the club keen on bringing him back next year.

The strongest links have been to Barcelona but the La Liga champions have their own financial concerns and with a new head coach at the helm next season, it is unlikely that a big-money transfer such as Greenwood would be sanctioned soon. All while the player's preference is to return to United and snub interest from elsewhere.
