'Stepping into unknown' - what happened to 18 players who left Nottingham Forest in transfer…
Source: Nottinghamshire Live

Nottingham Forest's summer transfer window stood out for a number of reasons amid a careful and considered approach.

The signings made have strengthened Nuno Espirito Santo's squad and can provide the "options" the head coach craved. Just as important for the Portuguese was the fact the Reds retained their key players, despite plenty of interest in them from elsewhere.

But Nuno will also be pleased that numbers have been trimmed. He prefers to work with a small group, and Forest did a lot of work on moving fringe players on as part of that.

Below, we take a look at what has happened to the players who left the City Ground this summer. We have not included players who remain on the club's books and have gone out on loan.

Wayne Hennessey:Released by the Reds at the end of his contract and is still without a club, although has been recovering from an Achilles' injury this summer.

Before he was axed as Wales manager, Rob Page suggested the goalkeeper would be sidelined for some time. He told the BBC in May: "Wayne's left the club and will be looking at what the future holds for him. It's a significant injury, it's not a quick fix. It is not going to be a month turnaround. We are looking at months, not weeks for a senior player like that."

Felipe: Back in March, the defender indicated his plans to retire at the end of the campaign. He has said the desire to spend time with his family was a key factor in his decision, although he wouldn't rule out a return to the sport in some capacity.

Cheikhou Kouyate: Still a free agent after his Reds deal expired, the midfielder is yet to find himself another club. There has been no word on what could be next for the 34-year-old.

Harry Arter: Will be near the top of the list of Forest transfer flops for many fans. Finally departed this summer when his contract expired, after his last competitive game for the club was back in January 2021. Yet to seal a new move.

Scott McKenna: Signed a three-year deal with Spanish side Las Palmas as a free agent last month. One of the promotion heroes, he will always be highly thought of at the City Ground.

"Obviously, it's quite a lot different to what I was used to," the defender told The Scotsman of his move. "But it was just something that really excited me. The opportunity to play abroad, especially in La Liga, was something I couldn't turn down.

"To be honest, I was open to anything. The opportunity came to go to Spain which as a league, behind the Premier League, is up there with the best of them. So I felt like I had to take the opportunity to go and experience this opportunity to play in some of the top stadiums in the world."

Loic Mbe Soh: Released by the Reds, the defender put pen to paper for Belgian outfit Beerschot late last month. "Stepping into the unknown with courage and excitement," he posted on social media. "Here's to embracing new challenges and growing stronger with every step!"

Gonzalo Montiel: Rumours swirled that the Argentine would be on the move again this summer after his Forest loan spell ended. Was linked with Everton, Bologna and PSV Eindhoven, among others, but is still with Sevilla at the moment.

Nuno Tavares: Headed out on loan again after returning to parent club Arsenal at the end of his City Ground stint. Is now with Lazio and seems to have made an immediate impact.

On his debut at the weekend, he registered two assists in a 2-2 draw with AC Milan. Italian media highlighted his performance, describing him as "fast and furious" and pointing to his "record reaction time".

Gio Reyna: Is back at Borussia Dortmund after his Forest loan, although his fortunes do not seem to have changed much. He is still struggling for game time at his parent club, failing to get off the bench in their final match before the international break and racking up just 10 minutes from three fixtures so far this season.

Divock Origi: Reports suggested he would be free to leave AC Milan this summer after returning from his loan at the City Ground. However, he remains in situ - and seemingly in limbo.

In July, Calciomercato reported the forward would not be part of the Italian side's first-team set-up. They quoted Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is a senior adviser for club owners RedBird Capital Partners, as saying of Origi and Fode Ballo Toure: "The two of them have been called up, but for the Milan Futuro team. They are not part of the first team."

Rodrigo Ribeiro: Reports from Portugal linked the young forward with a return to Forest last month, despite his lack of game time on loan Trentside. He remains at parent club Sporting Lisbon.

Julian Larsson:Joined Burton Albion after failing to make the breakthrough at Forest. However, he is yet to make his debut for the club as he has been sidelined with injury.

Odysseas Vlachodimos: Moved to Newcastle United as Elliot Anderson headed the other way. However, the keeper could be on the move again. With some transfer windows still open, Give Me Sport report the Greek could join Belgian outfit Anderlecht.

Brandon Aguilera: Highly-regarded at Forest, some fans were sorry to see the Costa Rican depart for fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned club Rio Ave in July. Has made three substitute appearances in the league for the Portuguese side so far.

Orel Mangala: The midfielder signed for Lyon on a permanent basis this summer, but he now finds himself back in the Premier League with Everton on a season-long loan. "I feel really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," he said after signing. "Everton is a big club. When I've played against Everton in the past, I've always felt there is a big fanbase here with a lot of passion for their club so it was an easy decision for me to come here."

Moussa Niakhate: Signed a permanent deal with Lyon in a PS27 million deal. Has made three Ligue 1 appearances so far.

Joe Worrall: It was the end of an era for the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate as he signed for Burnley last month. He made his debut in a 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers last Wednesday night, then was in the XI again at the weekend for a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers.

After his Turf Moor debut, he told Burnley's official website: "Turf Moor, it's my first time playing here in my career, I've never actually been to Turf Moor, so it was quite a spectacle. I had my family and friends in the crowd and I'm very proud to make my debut here in such a prestigious game."

Alex Mighten: A long association with Forest came to an end for the winger on deadline day. He made the switch to MLS side San Diego but was then immediately loaned out to Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland for the rest of the year.

"An exciting team in an exciting league," Mighten said of moving to Denmark. "I am a great admirer of the Right to Dream mentality, and even though it is a young team, you can feel a great belief and confidence in their own abilities and playing style. I am looking forward to meeting the talented staff and my talented teammates, and I am confident that I will fit in well."
