Maggie's Swansea have spoken of their pride at being named Swansea City's Community Champions at the club's Player Awards Evening.

The cancer support charity are the Swans' 2023-24 official charity partner, with the relationship helping to raise money and awareness.

Their Swansea centre - located in the grounds of Singleton Hospital - is a haven for people going through a cancer journey whether that be those who have received a diagnosis, a family member, friends and carers.

Over many years their free services have proved invaluable to so many people in Swansea affected by cancer.

The incredible efforts of the centre, its staff and volunteers has been celebrated all season through the club's 'Tackling Cancer Together' campaign.

At the awards evening, the club wanted to recognise and mark the superb community work Maggie's do in their own right by naming them Community Champions.

"We're so incredibly proud and we're so grateful for the support we've had from the football club this season," said Lucia Osmond, centre fundraising manager at Maggie's Swansea.

"The campaign, although it's obviously been there to raise money for the centre, it's also the awareness, and the amount of people we've been able to reach as a result has really increased as well.

"The whole team - the fundraising team, our programme team - it's such a team effort and here in Swansea it's all about community, and we do that really well together.

"It's been such a good idea, and I'm sure loads of people have bought the kit as a result because it's supporting us and the club. This is in the heart of the community which is what Maggie's is about, supporting those in our community who have cancer."

The campaign has seen members of the Jack Army, players and people close to the club sharing their own cancer journeys, with many citing the varied emotional and practical support Maggie's is able to provide as a huge source of comfort and help during some of the toughest moments of their lives.

"From a cancer perspective, one in two of us will have cancer, so that's a lot of people in this area so we know we can reach so many people; whether they're going through cancer, whether they're a carer, or bereaved," Lucia continued.

"There's so much we do at Maggie's to support people, we're really proud and proud for Maggie's because it's such a fantastic organisation and we have incredible staff who work across all our centres, so for that to be recognised by the club is wonderful."
