'Exceptional' West Ham-linked player was top of Moyes wishlist before Thurs development - report

West Ham United target Ian Maatsen was top of David Moyes' transfer wishlist for the January window before Chelsea activated a clause in his contract, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers journalists, writing on 20 October share that Moyes may now have to turn his attentions elsewhere for a backup option to Emerson with Aaron Cresswell expected to depart.

West Ham had been keen to sign him in January to provide competition for Emerson Palmieri at the London Stadium [TEAMTalk, 16 October] but Chelsea "quietly" triggered an extension clause in his contract as per Evening Standard on Thursday (19 October).

If Moyes and West Ham wish to still sign the talented Dutch full-back they will have to pay a "substantial" fee to secure his signature.

Still hope

It remains to be seen whether West Ham United will have the required funds to sign targets in the January transfer window after Claret & Hugh's report on Thursday which suggested that the East Londoners could seek loan moves.

While Chelsea may have activated the clause in Maatsen's contract, there's an argument to suggest that he could still leave the club in January, on loan at least as the Blues only activated the clause to protect their asset.

There's a chance the gifted Dutchman could leave Stamford Bridge given his limited minutes at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham United will certainly need another left-back and potentially one who will not only replace Cresswell in the long haul but also possess the ability to usurp Emerson long-term too.

Maatsen is the perfect component and there's a strong reason why Moyes had him at the top of their wishlist.

The "exceptional" Dutchman is incredibly versatile, quick, technically gifted, progressive with his actions on the ball and a very capable defender and at 21 years of age, possesses all the makings of a top-quality Premier League left-back.

Moyes should not give up hope to sign him, after Chelsea's clause activation. He could well prove the perfect left-back transfer decision.
