Philippe Clement shares why starting in-form Rangers star v Livingston would have been a big 'risk'

Rangers boss Philippe Clement has admitted that starting Danilo against Livingston would have been a real 'risk'.

Rangers picked up another win on Sunday afternoon, beating Livingston 2-0 at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring after seeing James Tavernier fire a penalty wide of the post.

Tavernier atoned for his error after the break, slotting home from the spot to send Rangers home with three points.

Philippe Clement shares why Danilo didn't start for Rangers Rangers boss Philippe Clement will be delighted with the performance and the result having made a number of changes.

The likes of Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers and Danilo were all left on the bench having started against Sparta Prague on Thursday night.

Dessers may have scored the opener but his all-round performance probably wasn't enough to push him ahead of Danilo in the pecking order.

Danilo may well be straight back in after the international break and Clement has now explained why he didn't start against Livingston.

Clement has told Rangers Review that he studied the numbers and saw that Danilo went through 1300 metres of high-intensity sprinting against Sparta just a few days ago.

Clement felt that throwing Danilo straight back out there would have been a big risk, preferring to leave him on the bench and give Dessers a chance.

"Yes, because for example, Danilo did 1300 metres high-intensity runs on Thursday so if I let him start today I take a risk, for example. Of course, I looked at that," said Clement.

There was some decent hold-up play on show but Dessers still doesn't look completely confident leading the line.

Danilo has shown himself to be a more effective presser than Dessers and looks more dangerous around the box.

As we have said before, Dessers isn't a lost cause despite criticism from Rangers supporters.

The Nigerian still has a long way to go though and Danilo won't be too worried about losing his place after Sunday's win.
